Thursday, Just because WI was yesterday.....

Just because I had a 3lbs loss yesterday does not mean I can afford to relax and not take notice.  I really have to be sure to have HexA and HexB each day.  Don't know why but it all seems a bit flat the day after weigh in.  I guess because next Wednesday seems a long way off.  Had a nice morning catching up with emails and FB.  Brother's birthday today.  I have bought him a chocolate caterpillar cake, adorned with smarties!  That will test me this afternoon. Oh he is 43 today!  Sean said "You are not serious?"  You bet!  Had to do a quickie shop in Asda, I'd run ot of LM red onion sausages, fruit for my fridge salad bowl, sweetener, also bought more Quark, 0% greek yoghurt.  Crazy I spend so much  more on food these days. Only went for the sausages,  £42 later!  Asda had their own extra low fat mayo on for £1. On looking at the label and comparing it to Hellmans Extra light, it was way more in calories. So I put it back on the shelf.
Paddy was raring to go for our daily Body Magic this morning, as you can tell from this photo

So onto food intake for Thursday.  Breakfast bowl of fruit, same as usual.
My days do seem to follow the same old pattern.  Guess lots of people are the same

Had work to do so was pretty pre-occupied for most of the remaining morning.  So Sean said he would do lunch for me.  2 poached eggs on 2 slices wholemeal bread (400g loaf). Yay, got my HexB in!!  I really was distracted and all too quickly lunch was served.  I didn't have the heart to say "Where's the superfree?" I had a tablespoon of extra light mayo on top of each egg.  It was nice but I wish I'd had mushrooms and tomatoes with it. Does not look very appetising, but it was quite filling.

After lunch I prepped the evening meal.  It is a favourite of ours, but I decided to tweak and turn it into a SW friendly meal. Cajun chicken with savoury rice.  I skinned the chicken thighs, covered with approx 2-3 tbps cajun powder,  then laid them in a roasting dish, sprayed with frylight.  The other smaller roasting dish has the skin in - for the dogs. Cannot believe how much skin there was!! Once again I am wishing I had used Quorn chicken pieces. 180deg 45 mins.

I fried a couple of handfuls of frozen diced onion, in frylight,  with 2 sticks of celery diced, 1/2 red pepper diced, mushrooms diced, 3 spring onions, and after it had all cooked for about 5 minutes, added a handful of peas. (plenty of Super free).. Meanwhile I boiled a cup of  washed basmati rice in plenty of boiling water, with a tsp of turmeric (mainly for colour) until al dente. Drained it well and then mixed it with the veggies in one pan.  It was served with 0% greek yoghurt which had 1tsp mint sauce, finely chopped tomatoes and onion finely chopped.  Also small salad as superfree. Et voila!

So leftover rice pudding for dessert and raspberries.

I did make it to see my brother and took the Caterpillar chocolate cake smothered in smarties.  I made everyone a cuppa and a slice.  I did not have any.  I could have killed for a slice, but I resisted and was really chuffed to bits.  On the whole I am happy with the day.  I don't mention my liquid intake, but its always coffee in the morning, followed by cups of tea, lemon and ginger or strawberry fruit teas.  I also have 2-3 bottles water (500ml)  No alcohol. I did have a couple of mikado's during the afternoon but I am pleased I could stop at just 2 !!

Not sure if I have mentioned my total weight loss, 1st 4.5 lbs.  I read some amazing blogs where some ladies have lost  a staggering amount of weight, but you know I had to start somewhere, progress is being made.  Bring it on!

Hope you all had a good day...
Love Carol xx

Phew, 3lbs off - the relief !

Yes the relief.  Simply because I started to take my journey a lot more seriously, by recording food intake.
I really got off to slow start on Jan 7th this year.By mid February I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and subsequently under active thyroid.  Googling as you do, I discovered under active thyroid meant my metabolism was not working properly, so I figured calories were not being burned off.  Couldn't really blame all the slow start on this diagnosis, but it certainly wasn't helping.
I even changed my weighing scales a few weeks ago as the display was dim.  The downside to this was the scales were reading 3.5lbs more than the dim display scales.  Once I realised that my start weight therefore would have been 3.5lbs heavier, I calmed down.  Now when I weigh myself I can see the display and it also weighs in 1/4 and 1/2lb increments. £17 well spent.  As I am not paying  £5 club fees i can afford little treats.

Wednesday dawned, the WI was a good result for me.  3lbs off.  Started this journey saying I needed to lose 42lbs, I was being cautious.    I will know when I'll be ready to stop, but thats a long way off.
Normal body Magic too, 35 min dog walk. Hoping to push a little further each week.  i,e. 45 mins next week...etc..Dogs won't mind one little bit!

So breakfast was the usual fruit salad with a Mullerlight Mandarin yoghurt on top.  Knowing me I will soon be bored with this and look for something else to have.
After having a carton of Alpro Almond unsweetened Milk in the fridge I decided to do something with it, before I end up throwing it away as the sell by date has gone !

I weighed 100g pudding rice and added the whole carton milk, plus some sweetener ( I will adjust later if it needs more) sprinkled nutmeg on top.  Into the oven 170deg 1-2 hours. Its smelling lovely as I type this.  Tasted ok. I added 2tbps half fat evap milk and frozen raspberries (defrosted!)

Lunch - this is how I eat it nowadays: 2 eggs in frylight, 1 x LM red onion sausage, 2 slices of potato from last nights dinner, one rasher of bacon, then canned toms, 6oz mushrooms, 2 frozen dollops of spinach (thank you KM!) One tbsp brown sauce (1 syn). The photo underneath is how I used to do it.
Sublte changes that are helping me lost weight.

As I am now only having one cup of coffee a day, I am experimenting with fruity teas.  My favourite has to be lemon and ginger, I love the kick the ginger gives off.  I tried the Green Tea ones but not enough fruitiness for me, so i bought these today...The cashier in my local Sainsburys commented on the lovely smell!  Really nice taste too.

Dinner was a simple Roast chicken affair, actifried potatoes and parsnips, steamed cauli, cabbage, carrots and peas.  I added gravy after the photo (5 syns).  Dessert was the rice pudding.

So day after weigh day gone. I am always relieved because,  previously I would eat what I want the day after WI, no wonder I had so many failed attempts to lose weight.  The next weight loss starts the minute you step off those scales!  Great that I picked up that little saying of a fellow blogger!

HexA = 500ml Alpro unsweetened Almond Milk
HexB = See comment below!

SYNS
Brown sauce = 1
2 Tbls Half fat Evaporated Milk = 1.5
Gravy = 5

total Syns = 7.5

I have only realised this morning, finalising yesterdays blog, that I did not have a HexB.  I feel really bad about this as I am spouting about how much I have learned, writing it all down, but there you go missing vital points.  Truth is I was going to have Alpen Light for pudding but the rice was so filling.  By then (8pm) I really was full and in bed at 9.45pm.  I wish now I'd had a slice of wholemeal bread at lunch time and an Alpen light with my cup of strawberry tea. Darn it!  I scoured the book looking at the list of HexB and couldn't find anything that was on the list.  Always learning eh???
Hope you all have a good day.

Day before Weigh In - Must take care..

Think you will be hearing a lot about our two Airedales, Paddy and Molly. This is a pic of the pair of them Tuesday morning on our daily constitutional by the River Trent.

Handler - me!

Routine Tuesday morning, trying to get out earlier with dogs as my morning seems to get less and less if we leave it too late. Managed another bowl of fruit salad and Cherry 0% Activia yoghurt for breakfast. I made quite a lot of it as I find it easier, if it is already prepared in the fridge, to dish out a breakfast portion. Not sure if I could be bothered to peel melon, wash grapes, peel kiwi fruit etc in the mornings. Photo is same as yesterdays breakfast. Paddy and Molly met up with some playmates and romped around the streams, must admit Paddy is behaving himself these days. Still bolshy and pushy, bit like a stroppy teenager!

Lunch seemed to be here so quickly as I was quite busy.  I asked my hubby, Sean, to rustle up a quick salad, nothing fancy, just a plain salad.  Lean ham, lettuce, chopped celery, beetroot, tomatoes.  I finished it off with a 12g handful of parmesan cheese and 2 tbsp extra light mayo.  Don't know what it is but when someone else makes me a salad I enjoy it.  I never like my own as I go over the top, boiled eggs, baked beans, laughing cow light triangles. Yet Sean's was as good.
Started to actually write things down which makes blogging easier.  Also much easier to keep tabs on syns, and healthy extras.

Dinner tonight Crusted cod, new potatoes, mixed frozen greens. A lady on DM facebook page kindly gave me the recipe.  I usually fry in frylight, but find my house smells of fish for 2-3 days, so I really needed an alternative way of cooking.  So simple:  toast 2 slices of wholemeal bread (from 400g loaf), when cool blitz in processor to make breadcumbs.  I added some parsley and lemon to the mix.  Dipped the cod in beaten egg, smothered the top of cod with the breadcrumb mix, put on tray sprayed with frylight, baked in oven 180deg 40 mins, depends on thickness of the cod.  Morrisons had on offer a bag of frozen greens (peas, broccoli, beans).  Enough for 2-3 people and quick to steam.
I did use some syns for mayo (1syn) and tomato ketchup (1 syn) as it was a little dry.

Good old favourite - crumbled Alpen light - cherry bakewell, fruit salad (from the already made up supply in my fridge.  Frozen raspberries, sweetener and quark topping.  I had to syn the Alpen (3)

On checking syn count I realised I had only used 7, so I had 6 mikados just for the hell of it.
Weigh in tomorrow.  Ever had the feeling that all week you have been bang on plan, knowing that there is nothing more you could have done. Then suddenly the realisatiion of - What if - what if it doesn't show on the scales...Cross that on in the morning!

HexA = parmesan cheese 30g
HexB = 2 slices wholemeal bread (400g loaf)

SYNS
3 tbps Extra light mayo= 3
2 tbps ketchup = 2
Alpen lite = 3
6 Mikado's = 3

total Syns = 11

Have a good week everyone and remember what someone said recently.  The moment you step of those scales is the start to a new week and new weight loss.  No treat nights!!

I like Mondays and details of where I was going wrong!

Yes I have to admit I like Monday's. It means that the weekend is over, therefore, the temptations of times past, (take-aways, excess alcohol, chocolates whilst watching TV), have successfully been avoided.

After weeks of reading fellow bloggers daily blogs, I discovered where I was going wrong on many counts someone somewhere may take note themselves, hope so because its working for me and I am not going to any clubs.

Breakfast. I was not eating breakfast, simply because I was not hungry, but the most successful dieters, were the ones who did in fact eat breakfast. It did not have to be cereals, it could simply be fruit and yoghurt!! Or, a cup of tea with a banana and yoghurt.  This meant I could save my HEXB for lunch.  I also hadn't touched a HEXA.  For me it was, ( think this is the right way to say it)  "My eureka moment!"  It also meant if I wanted to I could have an  Alpen light bar which  would only use half my HEXB.  It could only get better.

Superfree foods.   I knew these were listed in the book, endless lists of veggies and fruits.  But again, by reading the blogs of those who have done the best, I found how to utilise this.  My first blog showed a photo of my plate of lunch. Two eggs, two bacon, mushrooms, beans, 2 toast.  When I look at it now, its all wrong. I wish I could remove it!  Now my plate would show 2 eggs, 2 LM red onion and rosemary sausages, tomatoes with mushrooms and two frozen spinach blobs stirred through.  Subtle changes but BIG difference in understanding Free foods and Superfree Foods. I read an amazing blog by a lady called weight loss bitch...did she give me an understanding on this subject.  Wow !  She explains it so well.

Portion Control.  Yes!! I thought, "woo hoo" I finally found a diet where the promo says "eat as much as you want" well, that was my interpretation and no matter when I asked anyone, "Does this mean you can eat as much rice, pasta, potatoes etc, as you would like?"  The response invariably was "Yepper" - I dont think so, someone with a voracious appetite (like me) can easily overdo the carbs etc.
So once again, sorry to bore you with this, I started to note these "bloggers who do it best", photos and studied them. There are free foods but ALWAYS superfree.  I used to think the 1/3rd Superfree rule, meant 2/3rds of a plate with free foods and a 1/3rd filled with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber.  Me not being a lover of salad hardly ever did this.  So I found  a different approach.  My curry last night, not only had chicken breast, 2 sweet potatoes, onions, peppers, curry powder, it was served with rice and a 1/3rd made up of red onion, cucumber, cherry tomatoes finely chopped in 0% Greek Yoghurt.  Next time I am going to use Quorn chicken pieces, as I am trying to eat less meat and poultry.

SYNS.  Somewhere in my stupid head was the idea I could use syns to have two glasses of wine a day (12 syns).  I was not allowing for the fact that I had also had a TBSP of EL mayo, Tbps brown sauce, list goes on. I must have been having in excess of 25-35 syns a day.  Hey, guess what was one of the biggest discoveries I made.  I didnt see any "bloggers who do it best", have alcohol on their general daily food diaries!  I saw that their treat was usually "mikados", I had seen an advert but didnt have a clue what they were.  Well, for anyone who loves chocolate, try them. 1/2 syn each. Eat 12 and only 6 syns.  So for me a glass of wine or 12 mikados...mmmm....Mikados every time now.  I buy Options drinking chocolate in a large jar.  I never weighed it, until I looked at a packet in Morrisons and saw it was 11g...so next time, I measured it and I had been using almost 18g, not a lot you may say but 60% more than I should.

So my Monday was off to a nice start, no headache.  A  bowl of freshly prepared fruit and an activia 0% cherry yoghurt.

Lunch, well this was a first and possible last.  I had half a tin of tomatoes to use up, so I put loads of chopped mushrooms into a pan, added two dollops of frozen spinach, handful of frozen diced onions, added some water and soy sauce.  Let it cook for a while then added the tomatoes.  I had intended to have tomatoes on 2 slices of wholemeal toast.  The mixture was way too sloppy and not worthy of a photo. My hubby said it looked like something the dogs would do!  So the mix was now going to be soup.  I added a small  handful of parmesan cheese and black pepper.  It tasted far nicer than it looked.

Dinner was the curry shown above.  For two people, I diced two chicken breasts and browned them off in frylight, then added 2 small chopped onions, 2 small sweet potatoes and a red pepper sliced.  2 tblsp of tandoori masalla powder, 1tsp chilli powder, 1tsp mustard seeds, half can of chopped tomatoes.  approx 150ml water and a knorr chicken stock cube.  It simmered for about 40 mins. Served with basmati plain boiled rice.  0% greek yoghurt with chopped cherry toms, onions and tsp mint sauce. One of my favourite meals.  But as I said earlier, next time i will try Quorn chicken pieces.

Later I had an Alpen cherry bakewell delight broken up in the bottom of my bowl, topped with few grapes.  I had a few raspberries that had defrosted, so i added sweetener and a tub of quark.  This topped the above.  Enough quarky mix for a repeat pud on Tuesday evening.  I will photo it as I forgot last night.

Now I read back and note I have not really had many syns
HEXA probably not enough on reflection : milk in one coffee and small handful of parmesan grated cheese.
HEXB one Alpen light.

SYNS.
1 tbsp Brinjal pickle  2.5
1 tbps Mango chutney 1.5
1 tsp mint sauce 0.5

total 4.5 syns.

Body Magic. Usual 35 minute walk with Paddy and Molly.

On reflection I can do this better.  I need to keep a tally of all syns.

Hope to do this better for Tuesday's blog.

Todays the day

After weeks of wishing I knew how to start blogging, I finally decided the only way to learn was to just go for it.  So as this my first blog, I have no doubt it will be the most daunting.  I have discovered a few fellow diet bloggers ( hate using the word diet) sorry, correction, a few fellow heatlhy eating bloggers, since I took the bold decision to slim down solo.  That is without help and support from slimming clubs.  I made this decision as I seem to have spent my entire life since my teens, joining various slimming clubs.  I was only successful once - 5 stones lost and that was 23 years ago.  Since then it has been a constant on/off affair.  What if I could use all previous knowledge of how this works?, I would save money and time. There is a but, however, I knew I would miss the friends you invariably make.  Then I discovered facebook support sites, with recipes and support, and more cyber friends than you could ever imagine.  You are transported into their world and you feel slightly guilty that you are avidly waiting with bated breath for their next blog.  You discover you know them but have never met them.  I wonder if they have any idea how much inspiration is given.  You will hear a lot about Sean, my husband and our two Airedales.  The Airedales, Molly and Paddy are my body magic.    The best blogs for me are the ones which show photos of every meal taken.  From these I have learned a lot about food and portion control.  So I intend to use them also, maybe someone will see them and give them an idea of  "What can I have to eat today?"
First meal of the day, frylight bacon, mushrooms, beans and two eggs...very filling.
Daily Body magic done with Paddy and Molly, 40 minute walk down by the river.  Thoughts and chatter about how I will manage blogging..
First photo successfully done.
in order to test various network blog thingies, I have to end day one here and will redo later.
Oh my head hurts!!
